Furniture Care Tips

Protect your investment by keeping your furniture looking clean and sharp. To keep your furniture fresh, you should have a maintenance cleaning done two to three times a year in low traffic areas or more frequently in high traffic areas. For best results, we recommend looking at the original furniture manufacture labels for care and cleaning instructions for each particular furniture piece. If original manufacture labels are unavailable or no longer apply because a change in upholstery fabric you can contact the material distributer for more specific care and cleaning instructions. Below are some general cleaning tips and links to where you can get more in depth information on how to correctly apply these tips.

Woven Fabrics

Regular maintenance involves vacuuming material with a soft brush attachment to remove dust and loose debris. Light stains and soils may be removed with a solution of mild detergent and water, rinsed with clear water and dried thoroughly. Mildew and heavy stains can be removed with a quality commercial furniture cleaner. Cushions/Pillows may be spot cleaned and placed outside to air out; be mindful to place these under an awning or screened area where weather, children or animals will not cause damage. To help prevent stains on most fabric blends consider using Scotchgard on your furniture. Do not use bleach on printed fabrics. Make sure before you use a solvent-type cleaner that your fabric is solvent safe so you do not damage the yarns. Do not use chlorine based cleaners. Microfiber

Regular maintenance involves vacuuming material with a soft brush attachment to remove dust and loose debris. On water safe microfiber treat light stains and soils with a mix of mild detergent and water, blot out with clear water, gently use hair dryer on cool setting to dry. Use clean new soft bristle tooth brush to restore nap. Mildew and heavy stains can be removed with a quality commercial furniture cleaner. Cushions/Pillows maybbe spot cleaned and placed outside to air out, be mindful to place these under an awning or screened area where weather, children or animals will not cause damage. Velvet

Regular maintenance involves vacuuming material with a soft brush attachment to remove dust, loose debris and fuzz. On water safe velvet treat light stains and soils with a mix of mild detergent and water, blot out detergent with clear water. Allow fabric to air dry and use clean new soft bristle tooth brush to restore nap. Mildew and heavy stains can be removed with a quality commercial furniture cleaner. On heat and moister tolerant velvet, a steamer maybe used to gently release creases and restore luster of fabric. Cushions/Pillows may be spot cleaned and placed outside to air out, be mindful to place these under an awning or screened area where weather, children or animals will not cause damage. Leather

Always keep leather furniture out of direct sunlight to prevent fading and deterioration. Use a leather moisturizer regularly to keep leather from drying and cracking. For general leather cleaning, use a moisturizing soap. Lather on with a soft clean cloth to remove stain, blot out with clear water and allow to air dry. Be careful not to saturate leather! When dry it is important to re-moisturize leather right away to restore luster. Mildew and heavy stains can be removed with a quality commercial leather cleaner. Cushions/Pillows may be spot cleaned and placed outside to air out, be mindful to place these under an awning or screened area where weather, children or animals will not cause damage. Cow Hide Fur

Always keep cowhide furniture out of direct sunlight to prevent fading and deterioration. For general cow hide cleaning, vacuum with a soft brush attachment in the direction the fur falls to remove dust and loose debris. For light stains lather moisturizing soap on with a clean cloth, blot out with clear water and allow to air dry. Be careful not to saturate hide! ​If a sticky/oily spill such as peanut butter, gum, mayonnaise, etc. use plastic spatula to gently scrape it out in the direction that the hair flows and then clean as previously stated. Always allow to air dry, never use heated source as this may warp and discolor hide permanently. Do not use bleach. Do not use chlorine based cleaners. Frame Types

Wicker/Rattan



Always make sure to choose a product that is appropriate for your type of rattan furniture. Generally if rattan is polished with lacquer or varnish any commercial grade wood polish will do; however, if furniture is made of synthetic weave, has a unique finish or any sort of paint job further consideration on the proper cleaning techniques will need to be considered. A commercial wood polish product can be applied and wiped off with a clean cloth. Read and use commercial wood cleaners as directed to prevent damage. Never saturate rattan, only wipe clean and immediately blot out spills. Do not use bleach or chlorine based cleaners. If an unreasonable amount of stain and debris remain or you are doubtful refer to your local directory for a professional furniture cleaning company.

Wood



Always make sure to choose a product that is appropriate for the finish of your wood furniture. Generally if wood is polished with wax, lacquer or varnish any commercial grade wood polish will due; however, if furniture is made of specialty wood, has a unique finish or any sort of paint job further consideration on the proper cleaning techniques will need to be considered. Wearing clean fabric gloves while cleaning wood furniture will help prevent fingerprints. Read and use commercial wood cleaners as directed to prevent damage. Always allow to air dry, never use heated source as this may warp and discolor wood. Do not use bleach or chlorine based cleaners. If an unreasonable amount of stain and debris remain or you are doubtful refer to your local directory for a professional furniture cleaning company.

Metal

Always make sure to choose a product that is appropriate for the type of metal furniture you are cleaning. Generally, most aluminum and polish steel metals are stain resistant and may be easily wiped off with damp cloth and dried immediately with dry cloth. If furniture is made of specialty metal, has a unique finish or any sort of paint job further consideration on the proper cleaning techniques will need to be considered. Wearing clean fabric gloves while cleaning furniture will help prevent fingerprints. Read and use commercial metal cleaners as directed to prevent damage. Commercial finishes can be applied to prevent premature rusting and tarnishing. Consult professional advice before using any abrasive or acidic metal cleaners.
